The Assisted Dying Service Team at Health New Zealand is responsible for operating assisted dying services throughout the country, providing a service that is:

  • Person-centred
  • Equitable
  • Accessible

Important:
When calling the 0800 223 852 number expect a phoneline manager to pick up the call. They will ask for your name and details about your life limiting illness/diagnosis. This information will be passed on to the assisted dying clinical team. The clinical team will then call you back within 24-48 hours. Please expect a call from the clinical team within this timeframe for further planning and discussion about assisted dying with healthcare professionals.

Clinical advisors (Senior Nurses) provide information and support to help you and your whānau navigate the assisted dying process. They can:

  • Answer questions about the process
  • Connect you with health professionals who provide the service
  • Support practitioners involved in your care

SCENZ Group (Support and Consultation for End of Life in New Zealand)
Ministry of Health Manatū Hauora

The SCENZ Group is a statutory body established to support the assisted dying service in New Zealand.

It maintains lists of doctors, nurse practitioners, and psychiatrists who provide the Assisted Dying Service, and can connect you with a practitioner if your own doctor does not provide the service.

The SCENZ Group is also responsible for the Standard of Care for Administering Assisted Dying Medication, which should be read alongside the Ngā Paerewa Health and Disability Services Standard.

We have linked the two standards below for further reading:

Standards of Care: Administering Assisted Dying Medication in New Zealand Ministry of Health Manatū Hauora

This document sets out the standards that healthcare providers must meet when delivering the Assisted Dying Service in New Zealand. While written for healthcare practitioners, it is a useful reference for whānau to understand what good care looks like, what their loved one is entitled to, and how to raise concerns if those standards are not met.

Report: Standard of Care: Administering assisted dying medication in New Zealand Aotearoa

Ngā Paerewa Health and Disability Services Standard Ministry of Health Manatū Hauora

This standard sets out the quality and safety requirements for health and disability services across Aotearoa New Zealand, including hospices and other services relevant to end-of-life care. It is primarily a resource for healthcare providers, but whānau may find it useful to understand what good, person-centred care looks like and what they can expect from services. This standard should be read alongside the Standard of Care for Administering Assisted Dying Medication.
